Tone Thesis of "I, Too, Sing America"

In the poem, "I, Too, Sing America," by Langston Hughes, the two tones of sadness and boldness are shown by his choice of words. Sadness is shown when the author says, "They send me to eat in the kitchen/ When company comes". When you read that the person is being forced to eat in the kitchen, you feel the sadness that is being portrayed. Boldness shines through when he says, "Tomorrow, I'll be at the table when company comes/ Nobody'll dare say to me 'Eat in the kitchen'" Seeing as the author is telling the audience what they will not do to him instead of asking or pleading.
